Common EMI Shielding Solutions
Shielded Enclosures, Gaskets, and Cables
Electromagnetic interference is a serious problem that engineers must surmount as a means of creating electronics that properly function in the world. EMI, when left unchecked, can cause immediate and long-term damage to electronics. The main tool used in the fight against EMI is EMI shielding. This overarching term is a protective barrier that prevents EMI from entering and escaping an electronic device. It is important to recognize that EMI shielding comes in many different styles and forms, which allows shielding to be versatile. Each electronic device has a different design, application, and environment, meaning shielding must meet each device's challenges.
Shielding Enclosures: this is a reliable and strong barrier that protects products from harmful EMI. Enclosures or boxes are often made from aluminum or steel, although other conductive metals are used (these materials have natural protection against EMI).
EMI Gaskets: this is a popular addition to the EMI protection family because it works best in conjunction with other shielding devices. Gaskets are constructed from neoprene and other standard materials. Gaskets are affixed with a conductive metal lining (wire mesh or expanded aluminum). The lining is important for creating a conductive barrier to protect against EMI.
Shielding Cables: This is an effective way to protect cables and wires. Like electronics, cables and wires can emit EMI, which is why shielded EMI cables are important for many electronic designs. When combined with gaskets and shielding enclosures, shielded cables can offer almost total protection.
