EMI Shielding Management Solutions
EMI shielding is not impervious to EMI issues. Being aware of the most critical factors that affect both RFI and EMI shielding offer many management solutions. Utilizing different components is the most effective way to optimize shielding outcomes.
Shielding EMI
Consider using these management solutions:
- Add ventilation holes along the top surfaces when heat is required to be removed from components located inside the shielding.
- Use a complete Faraday Cage over the entire EMI transmitting component (tied to a true ground).
- Be mindful that the total conductivity of shielding materials is proportionate to the shielding effectiveness of the solution. The shielding materials’ thickness then follows it.
- If circuit design is not enough to take care of EMI noise, shielding lids or cans can be used as a last resort.
- If engineers still find trace amounts of EMI leakage, a reliable conductive caulk will take care of the problem.
- When addressing a large area inside a cabinet, use EMI gaskets made from a compressible metal spring or a conductive rubber.
- Blackened mesh placed over a transparent window is the best solution if a see through window is required.
There are even potential problems associated with utilizing the above management solutions. When using the above tips and tricks, you must also consider some of the pitfalls associated with the above solutions.
- At higher frequencies, there is always the potential risk of resonance being generated by the size and shape of shielding lids or cans.
- Soldering a lid provided consistent and robust shielding, but at the same time, it is costly to remove and to rework any components.
