The Importance of EMI RFI Shielding for Safety
When an individual experiences issues with EMI and their phones or radios, it is considered an annoyance. At times like these, the EMI RFI shield acts as a beneficial device to reduce issues with interference. When EMI and RFI problems arise in the medical, aerospace, and automotive industries, they are annoying and life-threatening.
It is rare to find engineers in the aerospace and defense industry that do not opt for RFI and EMI shielding as a material and solution to protect critical systems from unintended and intentional electronic emissions. The entire electronic world is undergoing a digital transformation, and the same goes for military devices and applications. The continued proliferation of small, portable electronics in war zones significantly contributes to increased RF emissions. If not defended against, these emissions cause data corruption, data interference, and worse.
Beyond the complexity of self-generated EMI and RFI, military applications need to be protected again electronic countermeasure, such as EMP attacks and radar jamming. If military devices are not protected against these issues, it could mean a serious cost to life, equipment, and bases.
Military equipment needs to meet higher standards or interference protection when compared to personal electronics. Therefore, there is MIL-STD-461, which is the U.S. military stand for EMI RFI shielding. When shielding is built to these standards, it ensures optimal electromagnetic compatibility. Considering the amount of highly specialized and powered units being used nearby, it is important to set your requirement strict and consider MIL-STD-461.
