What is the Basic Function of EMI Gaskets?
EMI gaskets are an essential component for protection against harmful EMI and RFI. These gaskets are effective at blocking and preventing EMI, which is why they are commonly used in many modern electronics. Without these highly specialized devices, many important electronic devices would not function properly. In some cases, EMI can also drastically reduce the lifespan of a piece of electrical equipment. EMI gaskets, often called RFI gaskets, are a great solution for protecting electronics from damage.
In short, an EMI gasket has two primary functions:
- Isolation— EMI is found all around us because of natural and human-made causes. EMI gaskets protect a single device or component from experiencing EMI from the outside.
- Leakage— All electronic devices create some levels of EMI, which means that shields also need to keep these magnetic fields safely within the device. Shields also prevent the leaking of EMI into the world.
EMI gaskets are thin and used to fill gaps left between joined equipment. EMI shields are often used in conjunction with EMI gaskets. When properly installed, EMI cannot enter or exit the space.
EMI gaskets are constructed in different styles and forms, which allows them to meet the strict demands of engineers and designers. EMI gaskets are broken down into three main types, which include:
- Wire Mesh EMI Gaskets
- Beryllium Copper EMI Gaskets
- Conductive Elastomer EMI Gaskets
Although these tools are not seen, they are incredibly important for the modern world. EMI gaskets are used in the following ways:
- Smartphones, Computers, & Tablets
- Military Systems
- Medical Devices
- High-Speed Electronics
- Automotive Control Systems
